Leadership Encounter Evening - Tues 6 November

Roger Annett, Ex RAF Officer, will be coming to the Academy to talk on the

Indonesian Confrontation - 1963-66  - Air supply in the Borneo Campaign

In the Far East in 1963, an Indonesian Army of 333,000 men, together with 3,000 commandos, threatened the territories of the newly-formed Federation of Malaysia. Across a 1-thousand mile jungle border in Borneo, up to 13,000 of those troops actively supported, and many times took part in, armed guerrilla incursions from Indonesian Kalimantan into the ex-British colonies of Sarawak and North Borneo.

Under a defence treaty with Malaysia, overstretched and outnumbered British troops and their allies, operating out of strong-points thinly spread along the mountain ridges, relying on the SAS and the Gurkhas for intelligence and 'hearts and minds' campaigning, managed to keep the aggressors at bay, right up to the peace treaty of August 1966. That success was made possible by continuous air supply.

Roger Annett from 1963 to 65 was a co-pilot on the Argosies of 215 Squadron, based in RAF Changi on Singapore Island and detached to forward bases in Borneo. Last year he published an account of his experiences 'Drop Zone Borneo' and has lately put together a presentation based on this book.

Roger is pleased to have the opportunity to share this with members of the Sandhurst Foundation.
